Last week on the 26th October 2022, the Fair Pay Agreements Bill passed its third reading in Parliament with the support of Labour, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori.
The Fair Pay Agreements Bill seeks to improve employment conditions, by enabling employers and employees to bargain collectively for industry or occupation-wide minimum employment terms. Negotiations with employers could be initiated by 1000 employees or 10 percent of the workers under the proposed coverage.
The Bill passing its third reading means that royal assent for the Bill is near. It is currently set to come into force on 1 December 2022 which is one month from today. The well debated Bill has no doubt divided business owners and employees.
With election year next year, the National Party has suggested that they will repeal the Act if they are elected to govern.
